There are three basic kinds of duplicate elimination (“deduping”) for a mailing list, arranged here from the potential of removing the least amount of records to removing the most:
1) One Per Person: duplicate records are detected based on the first name, last name, and address fields. All occupants of a household will receive a mail piece (providing they all have different names).
2) One Per Household: duplicate records are detected based on the last name and address fields. Only a husband OR wife (with the same last name) will receive a mail piece. All individuals with different last names at the same address will receive a mail piece.
3) One Per Address: duplicate records are detected based on the address fields only. Only one person at that address, regardless of their name, will receive a mail piece.
